The Syrian Center for Policy Research (SCPR) presented preliminary findings from its new study, “The Nexus of Heritage, Earthquake, and Conflict in Syria,” during a gathering of experts specializing in tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Aleppo. The event was part of the “Duroob Gatherings – A Space for Contemplating the Roles of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Syria,” held in collaboration with the Ettijahat – Independent Culture foundation.

The meeting highlighted the catastrophic repercussions of the “two successive cultural shocks” (conflict and earthquake) on heritage, particularly in the three study areas: Old Aleppo, Afrin, and Harem. Discussions included an analysis of the key policies governing the fate of heritage in conflict zones, such as systematic destruction, institutional neglect, and governance chaos, in addition to the profound social and psychological impacts of these losses.

Participants concluded that cultural heritage, in all its tangible and intangible forms, constitutes a vital “shared moral ground” for bridging divisions and building trust within Syrian society. They underscored the urgent need to adopt immediate strategies that include emergency documentation, legal protection, and the rehabilitation of key sites. Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of revitalizing intangible heritage and utilizing it as a bridge for reconciliation and symbolic healing for the Syrian community.
